Fifty Words: DVDs

Lost in Translation
Translation is a geometry of movement, and this film is about the state of openness and unease that comes from moving between states of being. Movement is everything to this film – views from cabs, escalators, windows – and to the old actor and young woman. We're easily lost in their transitions.

Matchstick Men
This film increased my love of caper movies. Nicholas Cage is best when he plays twitchy, and Sam Rockwell and Alison Lohman play their parts with ease and cool. Ridley Scott directs the film with sleight of hand, allowing me to recognize my involvement only when it was too late.

The Office: Season One
The horrible workplace monoculture is familiar to me – I've worked for bosses as clueless and with people destined to become Brent. I'm not a fan of cringe comedy, but the documentary style, and the fact that the characters play to the camera, make this show a comedy of broken manners.
