I returned the TV antenna on Thursday, and met with much better service than before. The store manager explained that the amplified gain of the unit I returned was most likely my problem, and showed me a cheaper antenna that was much more reliable. In addition to that, I picked up an extension cable, a connector bolt, a new universal remote and batteries to match, and left the store without paying a penny.
After some modest fiddling with the living room TV, this antenna proves far superior. It even runs well through the VCR, allowing us to tape some shows.
There will be some fiddling for certain US channels, but we're going to be relatively fiddle-free.
