Fifty Words: Comics

Conan Chronicles TPB 2: Rogues in the House
Barry Windsor-Smith’s art continues to evolve, Thomas’ Conan continues to tear through courtly intrigues with his bare hands, and his battle bragging becomes more impressive with each issue. A fun pulpy read. One non-sequitur question” Why can’t Marvel remaster the colour in their new trades as well as Dark Horse?

Rising Stars TPB 1: Born in Fire
J. Michael Straczynski takes on a superhero series from the ground floor. It starts off like a Watchmen whodunit, with art by a third-generation Silvestri knock-off, but changes into a story about a community turning against itself. The profiles of the super-powered characters and their revised expectations are the highlights.

Superman: Red Son TPB
What would happen if the do-gooding Superman was raised in the Stalinist Russia instead of Kansas. Mark Millar’s answer is surprising: he’s still try to do good, but through imposition instead of example. The surprise ending was done before in Morrison’s Earth 2, but the real surprise is the epilogue.
