Weekend Roundup

A wet, blustery weekend. Where’s the Pequod?

Dina and Ben picked me up after work on Friday. We drove through the wind and rain and tried to figure out what we wanted for dinner. We decided moments before we pulled into the Blockbuster – instead of our usual treats, we’d go for Lebanese food from across the street. But first, we had to cross the street, and those puddles were about six inches deep!

First, we toured the video store with Ben and made our selections. He’s not crazy about wind in his face at the best of times, but cold driving rain made him even more unhappy. He was less pleased with the longer trek to the restaurant across the street. Poor little guy!

After waiting an unusually long time in line (there was a falafel shortage, apparently), we returned home, dried off, and settled in for dinner and a movie. We watched Whale Rider, sniffled a lot, and then collapsed. We had a busy weekend ahead of us.

Saturday was a day of work: housework, freelance work, shopping and packing. I started packing up all my boardgames in anticipation of the move, and I also managed to pack most of the card games. I have a few more decks to build for the holidays, and then I’ll have everything boxed away for at least six weeks. The turmoil is starting!

After the packing, we went out to Costco and Loblaw’s for provisions. We also kept our eyes open for potential gifts, but I’m not saying what we found!

We ate lunch at the Costco snack bar. They too had a shortage of basic items – namely, their hotdogs. There was a huge line up of people staring at the wienie roaster. It was bizarre. And hypnotic!

The weather was much colder during our wanderings, so we kept Ben stuffed in a snow jacket and buried under flannel. He appeared to have doubled in size from all that insulation. But withstood the indignity fairly well.

In the evening, I played some Sly Cooper, and then we watched Charlie’s Angels II: Full Throttle. The video game had more believable action…and better dialogue.
Sunday was a day of visiting. We drove down to the Townships to have lunch with Dina’s folks, and then went over to the farm to celebrate Dina’s grandmother’s birthday. Ben was on his most chipper behaviour. He spent most of the visit holding his great-grandmother’s finger and batting at her knit sweater (he’s starting to notice fabric patterns and textures. He also takes a great interest in shirt buttons and collars.)

It’s been a while since we had such a good time visiting the folks on the farm, so the visit lasted quite a while. Finally, we took our leave, and then drove through the falling snow on our way home.

Once there, we finished some (but not all) of our household chores, watched some TV, and then conked out. Not even the cats could wake us up this morning!
